Schools will also have to publish an attendance policy spelling out how they will get as many kids in lessons as possible.

A national register will also be created of children not in full-time education or who are homeschooled.

It will be a private list so the Department for Education will be able to keep tabs on kids not in schools.

Local authorities will also be shouldered with a new “duty” to support home-schooled kids so “no child falls through the cracks”.

The Schools Bill will also pave the way for more schools to become academies which ministers claim improves learning.

Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi said: “Schools’ approach to attendance is being overhauled to make sure every child gets the benefit of every possible hour in the classroom.”

Boris Johnson added: “I want every parent across the country to know that their child’s education is at the very heart of this government’s agenda.

“We are determined to raise standards in our schools so every child has access to the same opportunities wherever they live, and our brilliant teachers are supported to do what they do best, which is why we’re putting our education ambition into law this week.”
