FURIOUS republicans have told Meghan Markle to “stick to acting” following her “politically motivated” letter to Congress.
The Duchess of Sussex, 40, wrote a lengthy plea to two Democratic lawmakers in Washington DC on Thursday in which she advocated for paid family leave.
But now incensed politicians have hit back at Megan for daring to “intervene” in US politics – even calling on the Queen to strip the royal of her titles.
In a rant to the Mail Online, Republican Jason Smith, who represents Missouri, said: “Ms. Markle’s latest interference in U.S. politics reignites the question in my mind as to why the Royal Family does not simply strip her and Harry officially of their titles, particularly since she insists on sending this under the pretence of being the Duchess of Sussex.”
Royal experts had previously called her letter, addressed to Democrats Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, a “first try” for the Duchess to move into politics.
Angela Levin, author of Harry: A Biography of a Prince, said: “Meghan’s first try for a political role perhaps.
“She’s writing to Nancy Pelosi and Charles Schumer ‘on behalf of all families’ to get paid leave.”
However, although admitting that there was a “good enough cause” – many would “question her real motive” amid accusations of “hypocrisy.”
And yesterday, Lisa Mclain, a Republican representative Michigan, believed that Meghan Markle’s attempt was “incredibly out of touch with the American people,” adding that she should “stick to acting instead of trying to play politics.”
She said: “The last thing we need right now is wealthy celebrities pushing their liberal agendas on the American people.”
Last October, Smith was one of many to join calls requested to pleas for the Crown to strip Harry and Meghan of their titles over interference in the US election.
At the time, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had told voters to “reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity” while Meghan called the presidential race the “most important election of our lifetime.”
POLITICAL PLOY
Meanwhile, bemused royal’s experts have also questioned whether Americans would be convinced by Meghan’s rags to riches story – citing Meghan’s claims that she grew up on salad boxes from budget American restaurant branch Sizzler.
Representative Jason Smith, believes her “attempts her appeal to the working class” were “laughable”
He said: “Her comments make crystal clear that the passage of this massive tax-and-spend bill is aimed more at helping global elites get huge tax breaks than helping the working families she claims to have dined with.”
But, Megan has insisted that the plea was sent as an American and “mom” and not a politician.
She wrote in her letter: “I’m not an elected official, and I’m not a politician. I am, like many, an engaged citizen and a parent.
“And because you and your congressional colleagues have a role in shaping family outcomes for generations to come, that’s why I’m writing to you at this deeply important time – as a mom – to advocate for paid leave.”
America currently has no system for paid parental leave, although President Joe Biden has vowed to introduce it.
‘ULTIMATE GOAL’
The feud comes as sources have claimed that Meghan was planning to become America’s first female president following the failed bid of Hilary Clinton several years ago.
The source added that she had been networking among senior Democrats back in March of this year.
They said she had a view of fundraising for president, adding: “The Blairite, internationalist and Democratic party networks are buzzing with talk about Meghan’s political ambitions and potential backers.”
Pals of the Duchess have previously claimed that she had confided in a friend that her ultimate goal was to become President.
According to sources, she admitted the ambitious goal after beginning her relationship with Harry.
In 2015, she reportedly told Piers Morgan: “As a kid, I wanted to be either the president or a news broadcaster like you”.
Former editor of The Times, Sir Simon Jenkins has said: “Her friends and associates affirm that she is a political animal.
“Such is her fame, she could perfectly well follow a route taken by a certain Ronald Reagan.”
