Meghan Markle’s job title on Archie’s birth certificate left royal fans totally baffled & it wasn’t used on Lilibet’s

CAST your mind back to May 2019 and you’ll remember that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had just welcomed their adorable baby son into the world.

Unlike Kate Middleton and Prince William who have introduced each of their three children to the world’s media on the steps of the Lindo Wing in London, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex opted for a different approach.

Meghan was listed as a ‘Princess of the United Kingdom’ on her son’s birth certificate

After Meghan gave birth to Archie at the Portland Hospital in Westminster on 17 May, the couple returned to their then-home Frogmore Cottage in Windsor.

Two days later, the couple introduced Archie to a very small number of press at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle – where they’d held their wedding reception the year before – and then announced his name a few hours later.

After this, Archie’s birth certificate became public record – and fans were baffled to see Meghan was listed as a “Princess of the United Kingdom” under her job title.

When the former Suits actress married into the Royal Family in 2018, she was given the title the Duchess of Sussex – which is what fans would have expected to see on Archie’s birth certificate.

However, there is a loop hole in that although Meghan can’t technically call herself Princess Meghan, it does not mean she wasn’t a Princess of the UK.

By marrying Prince Harry she took on the female equivalent of her husband’s title – making her Princess Henry of Wales.

Explaining how the system worked for Kate and William, Lucy Hume, associate director at Debrett’s, told Harpers Bazaar: “While known as the Duke of Cambridge, he also remains a prince in status as the grandson of the monarch and as second in line to the throne, and it is therefore correct for the Duchess of Cambridge to describe herself as a princess of the United Kingdom.”

And that wasn’t the only thing that caused confusion for fans – as many didn’t know Meghan’s actual first name is Rachel before her son’s birth certificate became public.

In January last year, The Celeb Report exclusively revealed that Meghan’s two first names had been wiped from the document and replaced with the Duchess of Sussex.

When she welcomed her daughter Lilibet last summer, the Duchess – who quit the Royal Family in 2020 – used Rachel Meghan Markle on her second child’s birth certificate.

In more Royal Family news, Kate Middleton had to make major change to her appearance before Prince William engagement was announced, an expert has claims.
