The Duchess of York Shares Her Personal Experience
Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, has made a passionate plea to women to not miss their mammograms following her own breast cancer diagnosis. Speaking on ITV's Loose Women, the 64-year-old revealed that she only underwent the screening after her sister convinced her. The mammogram detected an early form of cancer that had not spread to her lymph nodes.
An Eight-Hour Surgery
As a result of the diagnosis, the Duchess of York underwent an eight-hour single mastectomy and reconstruction. Reflecting on the experience, she described the fear and anxiety she felt on the drive to the hospital, thinking about the possibility of having a mastectomy and not being able to see her grandchildren grow up.
Early Detection is Key
Sarah Ferguson's case is a reminder of the importance of early detection. She emphasized that her cancer was not found through a lump, but rather through a shadow that appeared on the mammogram. Fortunately, the cancer had not spread to her lymph nodes, highlighting the significance of catching it early.
The Duchess Supports Breast Cancer Campaign
The Duchess of York is now lending her voice to the Don't Skip Your Screening breast cancer campaign. By sharing her own experience, she hopes to encourage more women to prioritize their mammograms. In support of her appearance on Loose Women, she was presented with a personalized mug.
A New Role as a Loose Woman
In response to receiving her own mug, the Duchess of York humorously remarked that she is now officially a "Loose Woman" and expressed her enjoyment of being a part of the show.
