Rupert Mass, an expert on the popular TV show Antiques Roadshow, was brought to tears when he had the chance to value the sail boat from his beloved childhood film, Swallows and Amazons. The episode, which aired ahead of the movie's 50th anniversary, reminded viewers of the boat's significant value and the impact it had on Rupert's life.
Memories and Nostalgia
Rupert, now 63, had the opportunity to meet with the current owner of the iconic boat during the episode. The boat, named Swallow, dates back to the 1930s, coinciding with the publication of the original Swallows and Amazons book. Rupert expressed his amazement at being able to sit on the very boat that appeared in the 1974 film, which had a profound impact on him as a teenager and inspired his love for sailing.
How the Boat Came to be Owned
The guest on the show explained that after the film was released, the boat was stored in a boatyard on the Thames. However, 35 years later, the owners decided to downsize and put all the stored boats up for auction. The situation came to the attention of Arthur Ransome, the author of the book, and a group of individuals, including the current owner, decided to try and buy the boat. With the help of crowdfunding, they were able to purchase it for £5,500. Their objective was to keep the boat in the public domain and take people out sailing.
A Closer Look at the Boat
Rupert took the opportunity to examine the boat more closely. He was impressed by its condition, noting that it had not been overly restored or spruced up. The boat's construction featured mahogany clinker-built planks and elm ribs that were steam-bent and clenched with copper rivets. Rupert valued the boat at £20,000 to £30,000, significantly higher than other boats of its vintage due to its association with the iconic film.
An Emotional Moment
After revealing the valuation, both Rupert and the owner were overcome with emotion. They realized the significance of the boat's value and expressed their gratitude for having been able to acquire it through crowdfunding. Despite its high value, the owner confirmed that he and the other owners would continue taking the boat out on the water, as that is what boats are meant for.
Antiques Roadshow fans can stream the show on BBC iPlayer.
