Antiques Roadshow guest mortified as he learns pathetic value of glass collection

AN ANTIQUES Roadshow guest was left mortified when he found out that his item was only worth exactly what he had paid for it.

The show’s expert Andy McConnell was faced with a collection of glass vases, but the smaller one out of the collection was only worth as much as what the BBC guest had paid for it – five pence.

The collection owner threw his arms up in the air when he was told one of his items was only worth five pence

However, despite the poor valuation of that particular item, he was left chuffed by the overall price tag of the remaining items.

Andy was quick to find out how the guest’s collection had started as he had more than 250 pieces.

The guest explained that it had started in Brussels three years ago. During a chat with Andy he said: “I started to go around the street markets in Brussels, and I started picking up pieces of glass.”

He added: “And it went on from there and it’s still going now.”

Andy responded by saying: “I recognise it in myself. There’s definitely a mania here once you get the bug.”

When Andy asked how much the guest had spent on his collection, the guy said “too much.”

To which, Andy replied: “I’ve never heard a collector say they spend too little.”

The guest shared that he paid £400 for one item but it was far too heavy to transport to the BBC show.

But the pieces that he did bring with him were in the region of £40-£50.

In response to the collection owner saying that he paid only five pence for one item, Andy retorted that some are ony “worth 5p.”

However the owner’s overall collection was worth up to £300, making him a profit of £50.

Andy told him: “This is where the market is today. I think your three bits of enameled [vases] are probably £200 to £300.”

He added: “You’ve done okay on them, you haven’t lost on them, whereas these for me are really special.”
