BBC icon Peggy Mitchell, played by Dame Barbara Windsor, left EastEnders in 2016 after playing the legendary landlady on and off for more than 22 years.

At the time the nation watched the devastating scenes play out as Peggy decided she didn’t want to have any more chemotherapy to fight the cancer that was spreading through her body.

The iconic character took a lethal overdose of pills that caused her to die in her sleep leaving her family devastated.

During Tuesday’s episode the Mitchell family came together to remember their beloved Peggy, and her son Phil could be seen getting emotional as he recalled some of his favourite memories.

As Phil, Kat and Ben sat down for drinks, the gangster reminded his son “We’re supposed to be celebrating gran”.

Barman Alfie Moon popped by their table, he asked: “Do you want a cocktail? We could do one to celebrate your gran’s anniversary? How about Pegstar Martini or a Peggy Colada?”

As leopard-print enthusiast Kat ordered their drinks, Phil struggled to contain his emotions, tearfully saying: “It’s hard to believe it’s been seven years you know?”

Alfie agreed, telling him: “Wow, seven years? Well let’s raise a glass to Peggy, yeah?”

Picking up the colourful cocktails they all raised a glass to the legendary woman in her honour.

Knowing that actress Barbara Windsor passed away a few years after Peggy’s exit, fans were overcome with sadness and rushed to Twitter to share their heartache.

“I can’t believe it’s been 7 years already since Peggy died, 2016 doesn’t even feel like that long ago #EastEnders,” penned one emotional viewer.

“How has it been 7 yrs already since Peggy’s been gone damn time flies by #EastEnders,” added another person, including a crying face emojis.

Another viewer agreed, writing: “Raising a toast to Peggy Mitchell I miss her so much #EastEnders.”

A fourth sobbed: “Can’t believe it’s been seven years since Peggy passed away #EastEnders @bbceastenders.”

Someone else simply wrote: “A toast to Peggy,” with a crying face emoji.
