Soap legend Kevin Kennedy, known for his role as Curly Watts, has expressed interest in returning to Coronation Street
Kevin Kennedy, the beloved actor who portrayed Curly Watts on Coronation Street from 1983 to 2003, has hinted at a potential comeback to the iconic soap. Despite his desire to return, Kennedy humorously remarked that he is currently preoccupied with spending time with a group of girls.
Responding to his fans, Kennedy said, "I would love a Coronation Street return, however, I'm a little busy right now." His co-star Charlie Lawson, who played Jim McDonald on the show, responded with, "Never changed! X." Matthew Marsden, who portrayed Chris Collins, jokingly added, "It's a hard life, Kev!"
Curly Watts was a fan-favorite character known for his ill-fated love life, distinctive bleach-blonde hair, oval-shaped glasses, and mischievous smile. After many romantic misadventures, Curly eventually found true love with his second wife Emma Watts, played by Angela Lonsdale.
Since departing from Coronation Street, Kennedy has appeared in various other television programs, including a role as a David Bowie tribute act in Holby City in 2017. He also joined the West End London production of Queen & Ben Elton's We Will Rock You.
Off screen, Kennedy has been vocal about his personal journey to sobriety. He serves as the director of Kennedy Street services, a social enterprise that he shares with his wife Clare. The organization provides free telephone advice, signposting to local recovery services, home-based detox programs, recovery-focused initiatives, and professional advice and coaching.
Despite his successful ventures beyond the soap, Kennedy has made it clear that he would love to reprise his role as Curly Watts. In an interview with The Mirror, he expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "I'd love to come back to Coronation Street; I still have a great relationship with ITV, and I think Curly would have some stories to tell."
Reflecting on the evolution of the show, Kennedy acknowledged that Coronation Street has changed over the years, but believes it has improved. He commended the soap for tackling compelling ideas and stories.
Whether or not fans will see the return of Curly Watts remains uncertain, but Kennedy's desire to revisit the cobbled streets of Weatherfield is evident.
