EastEnders delighted fans by bringing back original characters Arthur and Pauline Fowler in a special episode to mark the soap's 40th anniversary. Viewers took a trip down memory lane as the iconic couple made a poignant return from beyond the grave.

A special appearance

In Tuesday's episode, Ruby Allen tracked down an old tape of Arthur and Pauline appearing on a game show in 1989. Pauline signed Arthur up as a contestant while she watched from the audience. Martin, the last remaining adult Fowler in the soap, shared the classic episode with his children in emotional scenes.

Viewers were moved by the return of Pauline and Arthur, with many taking to social media to express their emotions. Remembering the actors

Bill Treacher, who played Arthur, appeared regularly on the show from 1985 to 1996. He passed away in November 2022 at the age of 92. Wendy Richard, who portrayed Pauline, starred on the show from 1985 to 2006 and sadly passed away from breast cancer in 2009 at the age of 65. In a touching tribute, both actors were credited together for the first time in decades.
