The character made the discovery after being reunited with a former pal, who subsequently shared his own HIV-positive diagnosis with Zack.

Having shared steroid needles in the past, it led Zack – who’s expecting a baby with Whitney Dean – to get tested, and finding out the shocking results.

During his segment on The One show he praised the team and researchers on EastEnders as well as the Terrence Higgins Trust for raising awareness surrounding HIV and AIDS.

James got emotional when speaking about the response from fans, and said: “I’m so passionate about this.”

He hinted at drama on Monday night’s show when he talks to Whitney about his diagnosis.

James also revealed that members of the public have ‘refused’ to shake his hand following his character’s HIV storyline.

He said: “It’s storytelling at its best. You’ll see the Walford residents on Monday – it’s a similar reaction to what Peggy Mitchell, Barbara Windsor had which was you’re not coming in my pub because I don’t wanna catch this.

“Where within my story it’s been people saying that you can catch it from toilet seats and shaking hands.

“I’ve had it out there in the public, where people have gone ‘ugh I better not shake your hand’ whether it’s tongue-in-cheek or not it is it’s not acceptable either.

A shocked Alex Jones said: “It’s surprising that you say that.”

“It’s still happening,” he added.

James, 35 – who joined the cast of the BBC soap in 2021 – was praised for his appearance on the One Show as well as his performance in the soap, for raising awareness around HIV.
