But some fans have been left wondering if David has already left the village.

Taking to social media, viewers pointed out David’s absence in recent weeks.

One said: “Has David already left cause where has he been lately #Emmerdale.”

The actor’s shock decision comes as he blames a lack of gritty storylines for his soap exit.

He joins Dan Spencer (Liam Fox), Bernice Blackstock (Samantha Giles) and Rishi Sharma (Bhasker Patel) who have also left the Dales.

David joined the soap back in 2006 and has been part of some major storylines, including three marriages and being a father-figure to his former step-son Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant).

A TV source said: “Matthew has had an amazing time on the soap, but feels ready for a change.

“He hasn’t been getting any gritty storylines recently so wants to see what else is out there.

“He’s a fan favourite so will get a lot of support in whatever he decides to do next.

“He’s very excited about the opportunities available.

“He’s only just announced he is leaving so scriptwriters are working out his on-screen exit. It’s possible David could be killed off.”

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
