Great British Menu viewers are all saying the same thing as waiters wear masks – but celeb banquet guests don’t

GREAT British Menu viewers were up in arms tonight after spotting masked waiting staff while banquet guests enjoyed their night without them.

Some of the biggest names in British television congregated at Alexandra Palace to enjoy some first class nosh to celebrate 100 years of British broadcasting.

Great British Menu staff had to wear masks at the banquet

Guests, like Steve Pemberton, weren’t required to mask up

Queen guitarist Brian May, baker Mary Berry, DJ Dev Griffin, chef Ainsley Harriott and League of Gentlemen’s Steve Pemberton were just some of the celebs in attendance.

While fans of the show were mesmerised by the delicious dishes they were also distracting by the face coverings.

One wrote on Twitter: “Why are the serving staff wearing masks, yet everyone else is mask free and smiling???? #GreatBritishMenu.”

“Just watching Great British Menu: Banquet special on BBC2 & all guests are maskless & mingling while everybody serving are wearing a mask. Why? Once again it reminds me of something sinister.”

“Appalled to see the serving staff in masks in tonight’s final of the #GreatBritishMenu It couldn’t have looked like a more class-ridden, elitist event if you’d tried. Also made it look like the #bbc hasn’t progressed in its 100 years. Well done to the chefs tho.”

The likely reason is that the banquet was filmed when it was mandatory for hospitality staff to wear masks while diners seated at tables weren’t required to.

These rules for compulsory masks were lifted back in January.

Feast guests voted Spencer Metzger the champion of champions after his fish dish Be Careful What You Fish For proved perfect.

The dish, which honoured BBC series Sherlock, was the first of two on the night created by Spencer.

The second was an amazing pheasant main paying tribute to period film Pride and Prejudice.

Past winner and series judge Tom Kerridge said of the winning fish course: “It was a perfect banquet dish, and the room clearly loved it. Spencer, a fully deserved winner.”

Spencer said of his win: “It was an amazing day, working with this lot, it was a true honour.”
