But fans of his earlier work might not have recognised the star, who was sporting a bristly grey moustache.

Asked about the facial hair statement, he explained he’d grown it for the role, joking: “I borrowed it off a bloke called Russell. No, I’m loving it.”

Neil was a huge star in the 90s thanks to BBC sitcom Men Behaving Badly with Martin Clunes, where they played laddy flatmates.

He went on to grittier roles, including the sinister Nigel Morton in Line of Duty and has also been involved in a string of pubs.

The TV star currently owns The Plume of Feathers in Barlaston, near Stoke-on-Trent.

Alison, 48, explained she’d been in, with Neil replying: “Well if I’d known you were going in I would have organised a bit. You can always let me know.”

He was appearing on This Morning today alongside The Inbetweeners‘ star Joe Thomas to promote their new play.

They are both in The Crown Jewels which also stars comedians Al Murray and Mel Giedroyc.

Some fans compared him to a moustachioed characters in Bob The Builder, the animated children’s TV show he voices. One wrote: “Neil Morrisey turning into Farmer Pickles now.”
