Welsh opera singer and Celebrity MasterChef winner, Wynne Evans, has opened the doors to his extraordinary home, which he has spent the last six years transforming. Evans, 61, purchased the property after his divorce, describing it as "unlivable at the time" and uncertain if he even wanted it.
A Diamond in the Rough
Despite the initial state of disrepair, Evans was drawn to the house because of its original architecture and intricate details. The ceilings and doors left him in awe, resembling those of a grand stately home. Reflecting on his decision to buy the property, he admitted, "It was in a bit of a mess...practically derelict, and I was at the lowest point of my life." Yet, he recognized its potential.
Turning Chaos into Comfort
Evans focused on quickly making the house habitable for his two children. He transformed their rooms and ensured they had a comfortable space to call home during a challenging period. Despite appearances, he faced his own struggles, sharing, "I was in my dead parents' bed, which I'd brought up from Carmarthen, and sleeping in a bedroom with no glass in the window. It was not what you'd expect."
A Home Bursting with Personality
Today, Evans' home is a true reflection of his flamboyant style. The living room boasts a unique turret, and his famous Go Compare advert is subtly referenced throughout, including his iconic moustache displayed in a frame. One of his favorite rooms is the bathroom, which he describes as a "wow factor" with its deep copper bath and massive walk-in shower.
A Kitchen Fit for a Chef
Since his MasterChef victory, Evans has taken his cooking skills to new heights. As a result, he plans to remodel his stylish kitchen to better suit his culinary endeavors.
A Personal Haven
The house is filled with personal touches that make it truly his own. Vintage cinema chairs, a large piano in the music room, and various mementos create a sense of character throughout. Evans emphasizes, "I'll never leave, and that's why I'm really happy to spend money on it – it's not for resale, it's for me to live in."
Despite his initial reluctance to be there, Evans has developed a deep affection for his home. He explains, "Slowly, slowly, slowly, this house has become my happy home. It wasn't an instant thing, and I think I love it even more because of that."
A MasterChef's Home
Wynne Evans may be best known for his Go Compare adverts, but his home is a testament to his creativity and personal journey. Through his six-year transformation, he has turned a neglected property into a whimsical haven that captures his unique style.
