KATE Garraway has revealed that David Beckham sent her children personal videos while their dad Derek clung to life in hospital.
The telly star, 53, said the football legend recorded personal messages of encouragement for both Darcey, 15, and 11-year-old Billy last year.
Kate has made the revelation in her new book, Kate Garraway: The Power Of Hope, which is being serialised by the Mail On Sunday.
She says David, 45, messaged her on Instagram after Derek was put into an induced coma.
Kate writes in her book: “I hadn’t had the chance to look at social media so it was Darcey and Billy who spotted it and squealed with delight.
“I messaged him back, thanking him and saying the kids were thrilled.
“He sent a personal video to each of them – words of encouragement and fun. He said he’d been thinking of his own kids and how they might feel.”
David has four children with his wife Victoria – sons Brooklyn, 22, Romeo, 18, Cruz, 16, and nine-year-old daughter Harper.
Kate recently welcomed Derek home after he battled Covid in hospital for more than a year.
The Good Morning Britain star has spent thousands adapting the family home in London, including a rejig of the rooms.
The couple’s lounge is now Derek’s bedroom and the downstairs has also been fitted with a wet room.
Derek needs around the clock care after Covid ravaged his body, but Kate has said he is making good progress now he is back in familiar surroundings.
Speaking on GMB last week, Kate said: “It’s a worthy gig. No it’s been wonderful having Derek at home and lots of little positives, I think.
“And whether those are positives because it is genuinely helping his cognition being at home or whether it’s because I’m there to see the little things.
“Whereas I couldn’t go in before and we were on FaceTime and stuff. It feels positive, little moments of reaction.”
Kate then went on to share that 53-year-old Derek, who has spent most of the past year being unresponsive, had paid her a compliment.
“He actually said something the other day,” she revealed. “I walked in the other morning before I went to go to Smooth, I said, ‘I’m off to Smooth [Radio] now’, and he said, ‘New dress’. Which was just amazing.
“I thought that was amazing on so many levels, because he recognised it. Second, he realised to remember I need a lot of flattery.
“So there was an emotional connection there. And some basis of what our relationship was always based on. It was just a little moment.”
Kate touched fans with her emotional story in ITV documentary Finding Derek in March.
Doctors said that Derek had been “universally affected” — meaning his lungs, heart, kidneys, liver and pancreas had all been hit by Covid.
At his worst, hospital staff feared Derek may remain in a semi-vegetative state forever.
