KATE Garraway has given an update on Derek Draper’s recovery, confessing that she misses being close to her husband.
The 54-year-old has been caring for Derek, also 54, since he returned home from hospital in April, but things are far from normal.
She said: “I’ve had moments of great loneliness and fear. It’s hard because the person I wanted to give me a hug is the person that can’t – and that’s Derek.”
Derek spent more than a year in hospital after contracting Covid, later being placed into a medically-induced coma. Although he’s now home, Derek has suffered long-term damage to his organs.
Kate, who shares children Darcy, 15, and 11-year-old Billy with Derek, appears in the first of six episodes of BBC2’s Walking With… and discusses the challenges they’re facing as a family as she walks from Painswick Beacon, Gloucestershire to Great Witcombe.
The Good Morning Britain host confessed that, despite Derek being a faithful churchgoer, she hasn’t been herself since he got sick, but said she thinks there’s “something very powerful in prayer”.
She added: “You can probably guess what I’m praying for.”
Admitting that she still has a “crisis of worry about what Derek’s future is”, Kate revelled in the freedom of being outdoors and revealed that, unsurprisingly, she doesn’t get a lot of time to herself.
“I think this is probably the first time, certainly since Derek contracted Covid, that I’ve had a whole day to myself with no purpose other than taking in the sights and sounds, just the joy of the countryside,” she said.
Kate previously revealed that her garden had become her happy place and said she hopes Derek will soon be able to join her out there.
She said: “My garden is definitely my happy place & even though it’s not big or fancy I love being out there even if the weather isn’t perfect, because just being outside and listening to the rainfall and the wind blow through the trees is like therapy for me.
“I can’t wait for Derek to get stronger so I can get him outside too as I know it’ll be good for him.”
