DENISE Welch has opened up about the raucous time she had filming Coronation Street with soap legend Anne Kirkbride.
She spoke on Loose Women today as the show recreated the famous moment Anne’s character Deidre Rachid was jailed in 1998.
Denise played-man eater Natalie Barnes in the soap at the time, appearing between 1997 and 2000.
She said: “I feel so privileged to have been there at such an iconic time and Free The Weatherfield One. Everyone got involved.
“When I was in it, a third of the country watched. When I married Des Barnes, 21million people were watching.”
The actress added: “Annie Kirkbride became a great friend. She was one of the funniest woman I’ve ever met.
She dragged me off one lunchtime saying she was taking me for lunch.
“She was actually taking me to get me belly button pierced. She forced me to go through that.
“She was so obsessed with shopping at Kendals, this department store, that one night at 6pm she was racing to get to the shop.
“They told her she had an extra scene to do and she was so angry and had such a tantrum she bit a piece of her tongue off jumping up and down.”
Denise added: “She was an absolute hoot.”
Deidre’s trial was shown again on ITV3, which is airing classic episodes of Coronation Street, this afternoon.
Anne Kirkbride was in the soap for 42 years from 1972 to 2014. She died aged 60 from breast cancer in 2015.
