Max George reveals he hid secret depression battle in The Wanted by turning to alcohol because he felt ashamed

MAX George has revealed he hid his secret battle with depression in The Wanted by turning to alcohol because he felt ashamed.

The singer, 32, struggled to cope with the guilt of having everything he’d ever wanted while battling mental health issues.

He detailed the physical side-effects depression wreaked on his body, including a locked jaw, severe sickness and back acne.

Max admits trying to cover it up while in the band by heavily boozing before he was bed-ridden and forced to confront his problems.

Host Susanna Reid said on Good Morning Britain today: “You hear it from people who are on stage in front of adoring fans chanting your name.

“There is an image of you going into a hotel room and closing the door, being on your own and trying to find an equilibrium of the two.

The 32-year-old bravely spoke about his experience with depression

“Many people would think, hang on a moment – huge fame, adoration, validation, all of that love, what’s the problem?”

Max – who was on the show to mark Mental Health Awareness week – told her: “That’s what I felt, that was what I was asking myself.

“I almost felt it can’t be to do with me feeling down or depressed or my mental health because I felt ungrateful for that.

“I thought it must be I’m drinking too much. I went out and drank and tried to forget about it.”

Max moved to Los Angeles soon after The Wanted split, and landed a part in hit TV series Glee.

The Wanted went on indefinite hiatus in 2014

His character Clint was only supposed to be in the show for one episode but ended up being written into a whole season.

But when that ended, that was when his depression hit rock bottom.

Max said he only got help when his mental health fears turned physical.

The Strictly Come Dancing star said: “I woke up one morning and felt like my jaw had locked up.”As soon as I went to get up I felt sick. I thought I had some sort of bug or something.

“That went on for a week, then into a month. And thought there’s something seriously wrong.”
