The political drama, starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell, went to number 1 on Netflix’s weekly global ranking – solidifying its success and appeal.

In its first weekend, the series had been watched for a whopping 57.48 million hours by Netflix users.

The show ended on a huge cliffhanger but fans need not worry now with all the answers set to be laid bare in the forthcoming second series.

Speaking of the show, series creator Debora Cahn said: “We had such a great time making The Diplomat. And it’s a thrill to see how much people are enjoying it.

“We’re so glad we get to do it again.”

Netflix‘s Vice President of Drama, Jinny Howe, also expressed her glee at the show returning, saying: “Fans around the world are loving every minute of The Diplomat’s gripping and propulsive drama, and embracing Keri Russell’s powerful performance as Kate Wyler.

“After that jaw-dropping cliffhanger, we can’t wait for them to see what the amazing visionary team of Debora Cahn, Janice Williams and Keri Russell have in store for Season 2.”

In the show, Keri Russell’s character Kate Wyler plays the new US ambassador to the UK.

She has the pressurising job of attempting to stop conflict and work through crises and forge strategic alliances in London.

Kate is forced to do all this whilst continuing to upkeep her marriage and battle her way through any problems with her hubby – political star Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell).

Netflix are expected to announce further details on the show’s second season later this year.
