NETFLIX’S brand new film adaptation of the Jane Austen novel Persuasion has been slated by critics.
The new release, set to drop on the streaming platform on July 15 has been branded the “worst Jane Austen adaptation” of all time.

Fifty Shades of Grey actress Dakota Johnson stars in the leading role of Anne, with Carrie Cracknell directing.
Dakota, 32, is American, but plays the role of upper class Brit, Anne Elliot.
The movie’s description reads: “Living with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy, Anne Elliot is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities.
“When Frederick Wentworth—the dashing one she once sent away—crashes back into her life, Anne must choose between putting the past behind her or listening to her heart when it comes to second chances.
“Adapted from the Jane Austen novel.”

With only days to go until the movie is released, critics have torn into the adaptation.
Whilst the film was meant to be a fresh, modern take on the classic tale, film critics haven’t taken well to it.
Morgan Leigh Davies of Bustle wrote on Twitter: “The PERSUASION embargo is up so I can finally say that it is the worst Austen adaptation I have ever seen.
“Absolutely inexcusable. Abolish Netflix. Abolish Dakota Johnson.”
The harsh words were echoed by The Observer’s Wendy Ide, who called the production: “tone-deaf, demonstrating so little sensitivity to the delicate precision of Austen’s writing, that you wonder why she didn’t just go the whole hog and bung in some comedy trombone quacks and an audience laugh track.”
Tim Robey of the Daily Telegraph compared the film to Bridgerton.
He wrote that it was “…flaunting an antique copy of the novel in a full-cosplay selfie, but holding it upside down”.
Not all reviews were negative, as David Rooney of the Hollywood Reported referred to Persuasion as “a free-standing rom-com only loosely tethered to its origins, the film is a sweet distraction”.
