PEAKY Blinders saw the return of Alfie Solomons on Sunday night – but his comeback was tainted by a major blunder.
Despite having been shot in the face in the fourth season by Tommy Shelby, the season five finale confirmed that Alfie was still alive and secretly living in Margate.
The Jewish gangster – portrayed by Tom Hardy – didn’t survive without injury, though, having gone blind in one eye.
In the second episode of season six, Shelby visited Solomons and convinced him to go into business together to sell opium abroad to help “shift the balance of power” against Jack Nelson.
It was Solomons’ preoccupation with opera, however, which provided the character’s standout line: “I always thought opera was just fat people f***ing shouting.”
The controversial character also referenced killing an Italian during World War I – and fans were quick to ridicule the admission.
Alongside an emoji of a confused face, one person penned: “This is the second time that Alfie has referenced killing an Italian in the war. Italy were on our side, so who did Alfie fight for?”
Echoing their comments, someone else said: “Slightly confused as to why Solomon stated he killed Italian soldiers during World War I. The Italians were on the allied side.”
While a third added: “Anyone notice Alfie in tonight’s Peaky Blinders talk about having his bayonet in Italian soldiers during the war? It doesn’t add up.”
Others were delighted about the reunion, with some saying that Alfie’s return to Peaky Blinders was “the best thing ever”.
It is not known how big of a role Alfie will play this season, but with Tommy still clashing with fascist politician Oswald Mosley, it’s likely he might need his help once again.
Meanwhile, Ruby Shelby – the daughter of Tommy and Lizzie – is seeing her health slowly deteriorate after hearing voices.
This Sunday’s episode will see her suffer more health complications, too, leading Tommy to believe that his family has been cursed.
