Tens of thousands of viewers called for Phil and Holly Willoughby to be sacked when they failed to join members of the public who had lined up for hours to pay their respects.

On Thursday they picked up This Morning’s NTA for the Best Daytime Programme at Wembley’s OVO Arena where they were asked about the public outcry.

Following the win, Phil, 60, was asked by a member of the press: “Phil do you think this vindicates you for queue-gate?

“Do you think now that you’ve won this the public have said ‘actually we don’t care that much’ about queue gate?”

Phil replied: “We are so grateful to our amazing viewers. We love them” before rushing off.

Moments earlier Holly and Phil were booed by the audience inside the National Television Awards as they appeared on screen when the nominations for Best Daytime Programme were read out.

People watching at home commented on Twitter and a source in the audience said: “The boos in the room were very loud when Holly and Phil flashed up and were then announced as the winners.

“It was really embarrassing. Some of the Loose Women panel didn’t even clap. It was all very awkward.”

Those watching at home also spotted that Alison Hammond got huge cheers as she took to the microphone after them.

But she used her time on the stage to take a swipe at Ant and Dec after she was snubbed for the Best Presenter gong in the category.

The Geordie duo picked up the prize for the 21st year.

Alison teased: “Now we all know I should have won an award tonight …

“But you know what, Bradley Walsh, and the legends Ant and Dec are amazing.”
