Kiya who was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease was overwhelmed when she met a puppy called Coco

Channel 4 viewers were introduced to Kiya who was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease when she was younger.

The condition meant that she had to give up certain activities and had hoped to find a “small and fluffy” pooch to keep her busy.

Kiya’s mum explained: “She is like a Jack Russell, very small, but feisty, but she’s got a really great sense of humour.

“We just need [a dog] which isn’t going to knock Kiya over and she wants one which can sit on her lap in her wheelchair.”

Kiya suffers with Mitochondrial Disease, this means that the mitochondria in the cells are not producing enough energy. Sometimes they are not very efficient or they do not work at all.

The staff at Wood Green animal charity were unsure if a puppy would be too much work for Kiya, but decided to introduce her to a litter of three cockapoo puppies that were around around seven weeks old.

The family were thrilled when they were told that they would be meeting the dogs.

As soon as Kiya met the four-legged animals she beamed with excitement and was comfortable playing with them.

But there was one dog that immediately caught Kiya’s attention – a small brown female pup called Coco.

Discussing her daughter’s condition in more detail, her mum explained: “She’s always saying she wants to be normal and do what she used to do.

“She was completely healthy and last year she woke up with a bad headache and was screaming in so much pain and being sick so we took her to hospital.

“She went on to have seizures and had them for 12 hours and I screamed there was something wrong with her brain and that’s how it started.”

Her dad added: “She’s had 10 to 11 types of seizures and what we’ve witnessed, we wouldn’t wish it on anyone.”

Her mum told viewers: “For Kiya to have a dog she could look after I think would be the ultimate happiness for her.”

The family unanimously decided that Coco would be the perfect fit for them and agreed to adopt her.

Viewers were left blubbering as they watched Coco find a forever home and Kiya get her dream pet.

One wrote: “Why does this programme make me cry (happy) tears every week. Enjoy your forever home Coco. #thedoghouse”

“I pretty much blubbed through the last 15 minutes. What a sweet girl Kiya is and such lovely parents,” a second viewer shared.

Another posted: “Corrr #TheDogHouse done me again. Coco is a very lucky little dog.”

A fourth commented: “I feel satistied after watching #TheDogHouse. Coco, Raffy and Arthur all looked so at home in their forever homes.”

Another teary-eyed fan wrote: “I’m bursting into tears! This little girl is a little warrior! She deserves a dog! Bless her #thedoghouse.”

The Dog House airs on Thursdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
