Belinda Lane began her own one-woman mission to hunt down every potential culprit involved in the murder of her daughter Crystal Theobald, helping police capture them via two MySpace profiles where she portrayed herself as two younger women.

Belinda Lane witnessed a scene no mother should ever have to see in February 2006, where she was forced to watch her own daughter get gunned down in cold blood by gang members.

Though a number of her daughter’s killers had either been captured or turned themselves in since the night of the attack, it took 14 years for the man behind the wheel of the getaway car that night to face punishment. Entrapped via Belinda’s workings on MySpace, William Soleto was arrested and charged with voluntary manslaughter along with gang and firearm allegations, all of which he plead guilty to as part of a deal with the prosecution.

What has Belinda Lane said about Crystal Theobald?

Belinda took the chance presented by her right to a victim’s impact statement to berate Soleto, calling him a “coward” and a “monster” before telling him she hopes other gang members waiting for him on the inside would ‘snuff his life out’.

In what was a particularly moving moment, Belinda decided to conduct her entire speech standing in front of a large portrait of her late daughter Crystal, though Soleto did not look at her throughout, instead opting to look at the courtroom wall.

In an interview with KABC, Belinda recalled her last words to her daughter as she laid her to rest: “I told her, ‘Baby girl, I promise you if it takes my last breath, I will get them; I promise you, you will have justice.'”

She went on to add: “It could have taken a lifetime, I never would have stopped.”

What happened to Crystal Theobald?

The 24-year-old mother of two was the victim of a gang murder in which her boyfriend, alongside her in her car at the time, was also injured.

Crystal Theobald was killed after she was shot in the head while driving. No one in her car at the time of the incident had any ties to rival gangs, despite the guilty party claiming it was a retaliation attack after their own car had been shot at earlier in the day.

The film will arrive on Netflix on April 14.
