MONTY Don has been thrilling fans of Gardeners’ World since he burst onto the scene in 2003.
But one thing that has often got his loyal fans talking, is why he chooses to wear a scarf all the time.
Monty Don is known for his love of a good scarf
Why does Monty Don always wear a scarf?
Monty Don is not only known for his green fingers, but also for his love of a good scarf.
There has often been much speculation as to why he may choose to wear one.
In an interview on the BBC podcast Fortunately… With Fi & Jane he finally explained the reason why.
The simple answer is that Monty wears the “same scarf all the way through recording for a TV show to help with continuity”.
What have people said about Monty Don’s scarf?
Fans have often questioned why Monty chooses a scarf, especially on a summer’s day out in the garden.
One fan once tweeted: “Why wear a scarf? Is it a producer/luvvie idea?”
While another said: “why on earth not? I wear scarves almost all the time and have dozens of them from heavy wool to the lightest silk.
“Love them. And if you notice, I choose a new scarf for each series. There are worse sins.”
This one commented: “Why does Monty Don wear a scarf when it’s boiling?”
Another fan also took to Twitter and said: “Watching a repeat of Monty Don’s Japanese Gardens and having intense scarf envy all over again.”
Can you still buy Monty Don jewellery?
In 1981, Monty and his wife Sarah Erskine started Monty Don Jewellery, a London-based business that designed, made, and sold costume jewellery.
The company became a success and in five years, operated from a shop on Beauchamp Place in Knightsbridge with hundreds of outworkers and had secured as many as 60 outlets across the UK, including Harrods, Harvey Nichols, and Liberty.
Among their customers were Boy George, Michael Jackson, and Princess Diana.
However, the 1987 stock market crash caused an almost complete bankruptcy as it cut off American sales, their biggest market.
The situation prompted Monty to embark on a career in writing and broadcasting.
Reflecting on the experience, he once wrote in The Celeb Reportday Times: “We were lambs to the slaughter and we lost everything, […] we lost our house, our business.
“We sold every stick of furniture we had at Leominster market”.
Despite the business closing, some of their jewellery is kept at the V&A Museum.
You can still purchase some of his jewellery that has been pre-loved on sites like eBay.
