Anne Boleyn viewers gobsmacked as pregnant queen locks lips with future wife of Henry VIII

FANS of hit Channel 5 drama Anne Boleyn have been left in shock after the queen shared a kiss with the future wife of Henry VIII.

Actress Jodie Turner-Smith, who portrays Tudor queen Anne, tenderly locked lips with love rival Jane Seymour, played by Lola Petticrew, in the first instalment on Tuesday.

The pair shared a tender moment in the first episode

The highly-anticipated opening episode, which previously sparked a race row after casting Queen & Slim star Jodie, 34, saw viewers left on the edge of their seats.

As well as a number of racy sex scenes between Jodie’s character Anne and Henry VIII, depicted by Mark Stanley, there was an unlikely kiss.

After pregnant Anne is blindsided by the king taking a liking for one of her ladies in waiting, Jane, she pulls her aside to suss her new love rival.

The episode, which is the first of the three-part Channel 5 drama, sees the queen first lash out at Jane in earshot, calling her a “spiteful little b****”.

The scene saw Anne and Jane walking together

“I don’t mean you, my little mouse, the other Jane,” she reassures her lady in waiting, realising she has overheard, before asking her to take a walk.

“I wanted to take a moment to talk to you, woman to woman. I feel like I am uniquely placed to understand what you feel right now,” Anne continues.

“I know what it’s like to have all their eyes on you yet never be seen. They make you feel like a piece of meat!”

Anne then bluntly asks: “Are you in love, Jane?” to which she quickly replies: “No”, seeing the two move closer and closer together.

Anne asked her lady in waiting if she was in love, before kissing her

The show documents Anne’s final months of life

The doomed queen adds: “You’re lucky, it’s difficult to love a man, especially when he is your husband. Remember who you are, don’t betray yourself and you won’t live to forget.”

She then leans in and shares a passionate kiss with Jane, who admits she can “see the appeal” despite “wishing to marry one day”.

“I know it will not be for love, I perceive little good to come from that,” Jane tries to explain. “Security, honour, safety…”

“You’ll never find security in the king’s bed,” Anne issues a final warning, as shocked viewers tried to comprehend what they had just witnessed.

Fans were left confused by the moment

“Why have I just watched Anne Boleyn kiss Jane Seymour?” one confused fan took to Twitter to ask.

Another chimed in: “Even by Tudor standards that kiss was a bit full on.”

Others were more irate about the lack of historical accuracy depicted by the moment, writing: “Anne Boleyn did NOT kiss Jane Seymour. Why is Hollywood so desperate to portray women kissing? This is so ridiculous.”

“I thought this was a historical drama?” quipped another.

Later the in the episode, Anne tries to get Jane away by sending her on a “diplomatic mission abroad”, but soon finds her sitting on the kings lap.

Pregnant Anne miscarries Henry’s baby at the end of the episode

Confronting the two, she rips off Jane’s locket, which contains a picture of Henry, and slaps her across the face before she herself collapses.

The stressful confrontation causes Anne to miscarry her baby, and while she should be resting, the queen continues to try and prevent their romance.

The Channel 5 drama is set to explore the final months of Anne Boleyn’s life from the queen’s perspective as she struggles to protect herself and her daughter Elizabeth.

The series, which also casts I May Destroy You’s Paapa Essiedu as Anne’s brother, will show the key moments that led to Anne’s falling.
