Can you get double pay for working on a bank holiday? Your rights explains

MANY of us will be spending the bank holiday toasting the Queen – but thousands still have to turn up to work.

Are you entitled to double pay? We explain your rights.

Is your payday coming early this month?

The Queen is celebrating 70 years on the throne with her Platinum Jubilee on the first weekend of June.

A new bank holiday has been added to the calendar to mark the occasion, meaning the country gets an extra day off.

Yesterday’s bank holiday was the extra day, followed by today – June 3.

The government decided to move the late May bank holiday to give the country an extended bank holiday weekend to toast the Queen on her Platinum Jubilee.

Will I be paid double on a bank holiday?

It all depends on your employer.

There’s no hard and fast rule that requires them to pay you double on the day, but they may choose to do it as an incentive to workers.

You’ll have to check your contract to see if that’s something that’s offered.

You can always ask your boss if the bonus could be arranged, but it’s not guaranteed they’ll say yes.

They may even consider an extra days holiday as a sweetener.

Whether you get paid double or asked to work at all, depends on the terms and conditions of your employment.

Sometimes you can get paid extra for working bank holidays, no matter when they fall in the year.

Bank holidays can affect your payday because banks are not open to process or transfer funds on your usual payroll date.

Often when this happens, your bank will process your payment early before it closes.

Your workplace won’t necessarily tell you if your salary will arrive early, but you can ask your HR department to confirm.

It’s not just salaries that might arrive early this week. Many people who receive benefits, state pension of Universal Credit will also get paid early.

Can I refuse to work on a bank holiday?

This will also be something you’ll need to spot in your contract.

If you work in an industry that’s open on bank holidays, such as hospitality or retail, and your contract includes weekend work, you would have had to book the day as annual leave.

At the same time, your boss can’t force you to work more than your contracted hours, but sometimes wording in a contract can be vague.

Are there any other bank holidays to look out for?

Although the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee bank holiday is an extended one this June, there are more to look out for this year.
