CHANNEL 5 has offered the first look at Jodie Turner-Smith as Anne Boleyn in a new period drama about the queen’s most harrowing moments.
The new three-part psychological thriller will explore the final months of Anne Boleyn’s life from the eponymous queen’s perspective.
Anne struggles to secure a future for her daughter and to challenge the powerful patriarchy closing in around her.
Anne Boleyn will depict the key moments that cause Anne to topple, unpicking her immense strength, her fatal vulnerabilities and her determination to be an equal among men.
Jodie, 34, is seen in the first look image dressed as the Tudor queen in a black gown and headdress with a grey veil down he back.
She wears Anne’s recognisable ‘B’ pearl necklace with a gold pendant attached and stands in a dark room lit only by a few candles.
It was revealed back in October that the Queen & Slim star will play the second wife of King Henry VIII in the new drama.
In December, Jodie was pictured filming scenes on set in West Yorkshire with crew wearing face masks as part of the Covid-19 health and safety regulations.
Anne Boleyn is one of the most famous wives of the Tudor King, having caused Henry to controversially divorce his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, before being executed for treason.
The news of Jodie’s casting last year sparked a race row about a black actress playing a prominent white historical figure.
However, Jodie has spoken of her excitement at playing such an iconic woman in British history.
She said: “I am so excited to join these exciting filmmakers in bringing the story of one of history’s most controversial queens to the screen.
“I look forward to bringing my heart and spirit into this daring retelling of the fall of this iconic woman.”
Anne Boleyn will air on Channel 5 later this year.
