As the panel congratulated Kate Garraway on her nomination for documentary Finding Derek, they gave a shout out to the former anchor.

Charlotte Hawkins said: “We should also give a mention to Piers Morgan, who has been nominated for Best TV Presenter.”

Journalist Kevin Maguire then joked: “Who is he? It rings a bell, who was that?”

Kate Garraway added: “I remember the last time Good Morning Britain was nominated – it must have been two years ago when there was a proper ceremony – and it didn’t win and he was very cross. So we’ll see if comes in, we’ll see if he wins.”

Kevin also said: “He’s permanently cross!”

Dr Hilary Jones then chimed in: “It will be ironic if he wins it when he’s off air.”

The awards ceremony – hosted by Joel Dommett – will be broadcast live from The O2 in London on September 9.

On his last appearance on Good Morning Britain, Piers said he “didn’t believe a word” of ex-Suits actress Meghan’s claims she had been refused help with her mental health while a Royal.

The rant became Ofcom’s most-complained about moment ever with tens of thousands of complaints filed – and the Duchess herself even complained to ITV.

The telly presenter, who had been on the ITV show since 2015, stormed off the show after clashing with co-star Alex Beresford over his comments.

ITV said he was “being spoken to” by bosses – but it was later revealed he had dramatically quit.

He told bosses he wouldn’t say sorry because he had a right to free speech.
