THE Duke of Cambridge has never liked his royal titles.
From age 18 tradition stipulated that he should be referred to as Prince.
But I heard him say, “Don’t call me that, just call me William”.
So his intention to modernise the Royals has been “The Cambridge Way” for some time.
He is in touch with his generation, which is not so deferential to those in power.
And he is very aware of people’s feelings, much like his mum Diana.

You could see William was awkward when those children in Trench Town were putting their arms through the chain-link fence.
He would have had the intuition that this was not right, and expressed his displeasure to aides.
Heads will roll over this debacle.
Other criticisms are unfair.
He could not have refused to take part in the Land Rover parade, and it wasn’t out of step with protocol.
And with some islands hoping to become republics, it is also not out of line for William to say “who the Commonwealth chooses to lead its family isn’t what is on my mind”.

The Royals have survived by adapting to changing attitudes.
William will likely take to the throne when there is a very different Commonwealth, and a very different Royal Family.
