I used to be a chef for the Queen and you’ve definitely been cooking your sausages all wrong

SAUSAGES are a staple in many of our fridges – whether you like them in a fry up or with mash at dinner time, you can’t go wrong with good old pork sausages.

Whether you cook them in a pan or like to leave yours until the grill, you probably think you’ve got cooking sausages nailed.

You might think you’ve nailed cooking sausages, but it turns out we’ve been doing it all wrong

But it turns out that we’ve been cooking them wrong and an award-winning Michelin-starred chef is here to lift the lid on how to cook sausages the ‘right’ way.

There’s some common mistakes that we all are making when it comes to cooking bangers, so listen up if you want to get it right.

Jeff Baker, a top chef who has even cooked for Queen Elizabeth II told the Daily Star his top tips for how to cook the perfect sausage.

So if you want to get your sausages cooked perfectly every single time, you’ve come to the right place.

Remove the sausages from the fridge prior to cooking

Many of us will grab our sausages from the fridge and put them straight in a pan, but it turns out that you need to take them out of the fridge 20 minutes prior to cooking.

This will help the sausage to cook evenly.

Not only this, it also prevents the skin from splitting.

Use a saucepan

Some of you might think cooking your sausages under the grill is the way to go, but it turns out the pan is the way forward.

Using a heavy based non-stick frying pan is key.

And make sure you place the pan on a low to medium heat.

It’s important you keep the pan on a low to medium heat

It’s all about the fat

Many of us will opt for an oil to cook our bangers, but it’s all about duck or goose fat.

Jeff advises you to use a teaspoon of fat to get the best bangers.

Swirl around the fat until the base of the pan is fully coated and then tip away any excess fat.

No touching!

Put your sausages in the pan but make sure that they aren’t touching.

Ensure to turn them regularly so they get a rich golden colour.

It is recommended to cook your sausages for about 10 to 12 minutes.

Leave them to rest

Although your mouth is probably watering at the smell of your sausages, it’s important to let them rest before tucking in.

Leave them for a few minutes to let the meat relax.

This will ensure you get a tender, juicy sausage.

The mistakes you’re making when cooking sausages

Pricking the skins

If you prick your sausages before cooking them, think again.

It turns out that doing this will cause the juices to run out and you’ll end up with a dry tasteless sausage.

Don’t let your sausages touch and ensure to turn them regularly

Avoid deep frying

If you are someone that adds a good glug of oil to your pan when cooking sausages, you might want to have a re-think.

Adding too much oil can make the skin of your sausages go tough and the sausage meat can turn dry.

Don’t bake

You might think that putting your sausages in the oven is a healthy option, but you need to stop this ASAP.

Baking sausages prevents the exterior from developing the lovely crunch that we all crave.

If you want the best sausages, it’s important you let them rest before and after cooking and definitely don’t prick them!
