I was one of The Queen’s best friends and now I’m with Charles & Camilla – behind the scenes I’m making them a fortune

HE was beside The Queen for one of her happiest moments and now is the man responsible for steering the multi-million pound racing empire left to Charles and Camilla.

With her right up until her death, few people in history have got as close to her late Majesty as John Warren.

But now, 46 years after Charles’ late mother last had Classic success with a horse, a new superstar has emerged that could really put Royal racing back on the map.

And earn Charles and Camilla a fortune in the process.

There are five Classics in the Flat racing season and the final one, the St Leger, will be run at Doncaster on Saturday, September 16.

It will be a year and eight days since Queen Elizabeth II died.

Having watched Desert Hero’s amazing win in the Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, the hope is that he can go onto win the big one at Donny.

To do so would be a monumental achievement in the Royal racing operation.

Win a Classic and you’re a horse that will be remembered for a lifetime.

Desert Hero has already reduced Charles to tears, the King visibly moved when watching his Royal Ascot triumph at odds of 18-1.

Warren was on hand that day, as he is pretty much every day there is a Royal runner.

And just as he was when those everlasting images of the late Queen celebrating Estimate’s Gold Cup win at Ascot in 2013 were beamed around the world.

Warren is the man responsible for every Royal success on the racecourse.

He is the go-between for trainers in charge of Charles and Camilla’s horses.

He relays messages, passes on information and advises which horses should run where and when.

It’s fair to say his method works.

Charles and Camilla have earned £324,119 from their Flat horses this season, with Desert Hero’s win at Goodwood alone worth £113,000.

Winning the St Leger with its £396,970 first-place prize would see their earnings smash the £500k barrier and creep closer to £1m.

Warren was rewarded for his hard work in June this year when Princess Anne presented him with the Royal Victorian Order.

That honour is given to those who have served the Royal family or monarch in a personal way.

Warren was with the late Queen right up until just a few days before she died.

One of the few allowed in her closest circle, he said she had been in ‘tremendous form’ and was ‘wonderfully switched on’.

How fitting it will be if, one year on from her sad passing, one of her most trusted aides can help bring in a new era for her son in the sport she loved the most.
