KATE and William today wished for a “better 2021” as they paid tribute to grieving families and frontline workers in a sombre Christmas message.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge acknowledged today would be different for Brits after millions were forced to cancel their plans after being plunged into Tier 4 restrictions.
And they tweeted touching photos of hero NHS staff working during the festive season.
The couple said: “This Christmas our thoughts are with those of you who are spending today alone, those of you who are mourning the loss of a loved one, and those of you on the frontline who are still mustering the energy to put your own lives on hold to look after the rest of us.”
They added: “Wishing a merry Christmas doesn’t feel right this year, so instead we’re wishing for a better 2021.
“For those struggling today, there is support available: @GiveUsAShout @MindCharity @samaritans @theCALMzone @TheSilverLineUK @OurFrontlineUK @NHSCharities.”
The pictures included care home staff in Christmas jumpers and an older couple holding hands in hospital.
It comes as Kate and Wills and other royals won’t be attending their usual Christmas Day service today for the first time in 32 years.
The royals are usually pictured arriving at St Mary Magdalene Church on the Queen’s Sandringham estate.
Last year Prince George and his sister Princess Charlotte mingled with crowds as they attended the service at the 18th century church for the first time.
But due to Covid rules, they have been forced to axe their plans.
It is understood Kate and William are spending festive break at their country home in Anmer Hall, Norfolk.
Meanwhile, the Queen, 94, and Prince Philip, 99, are spending a quiet Christmas at Windsor Castle for the first time since 1988.
