Royal Family Attends Historic Event

King Charles III showcased his new tartan design as he, Queen Camilla and Princess Anne attended the Braemar Gathering Highland games. A Day of Sports and Celebrations

The Braemar Gathering featured various games, including racing, throwing, putting, dancing, running, and a tug-of-war. The King's delight was evident as he presented a trophy to Scottish strongman Kyle Randall after a closely-fought event. Traditionally, the monarch becomes the chief of the gathering, although Charles has not been officially announced as such.

Continuing a Royal Tradition

This was the first time King Charles attended the Highland Games since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II last year. The late Queen was an avid lover of the games and rarely missed the event. Peter Fraser, president of the Braemar Royal Highland Society, expressed his delight at the Royal Family's continued involvement, saying, "All the Royal family take a great interest in the games, there's no question about that."

A Tartan Fit for a King

The Scottish Tartans Authority designed the King Charles III tartan, drawing inspiration from the Balmoral tartan sett dating back to 1850, which is still worn by the King and other members of the royal family today. The new tartan, woven in 100% Scottish wool by Lochcarron of Scotland, features a central triple stripe motif and colors matched to 18th-century tartan specimens. It has been officially registered with the Scottish register of tartans.

Overall, it was a day of celebration and sport for the royal family at the Braemar Gathering Highland games. King Charles III's presence, along with the unveiling of his new tartan, added a special touch to this historic event.
