WHAT gift should you buy for a new baby?
It has been reported that Meghan Markle will treat newborn daughter Lilibet to a £4,800 Cartier watch.
But most of us will be on a more realistic budget.
So here are some bargain baby presents fit for a little prince or princess . . .
THINK AHEAD: Anna Cargan, of kidswear firm Build A Bundle, says: “Newborn babies tend to get given loads of clothes in tiny sizes. So if you buy clothes a couple of sizes bigger, they are usually well received and are likely to be worn more.”
It is also worth remembering that babies outgrow their clothes very quickly, so getting some new parents’ vouchers to use later is a practical idea.
BARGAIN BONDING: Nazneen Yasin, founder of online firm Fabula Toys, says bonding is an important focus. She adds: “Everything is a new experience for baby and parents. Something like the Incy Wincy Spider set of sensory story gloves (Fabula Toys, £30) will help develop stronger bonds between parents and their babies.”
If you are after a smaller, cheaper pressie, the Itsy Bitsy Spider Finger Puppet Board Book, £4.94 at Amazon, can be used in a similar way.
EARLY LEARNING: Trevor Ginn, owner of online baby shop Hello Baby, recommends gifts that keep newborns occupied and offer parents a respite too.
BUNDLE UP: Instead of pricey treats, creating your own baby hamper can be charming and cost-effective. For example, buy a bottle of My Little Coco Bath & Body Bubbles, 350ml at Boots, down to £3.99 from £5.99.
He says: “An activity gym provides lots of colourful elements for the baby to look at.” Trevor recommends the Lamaze activity gym, £34.99 from hellobaby direct.com, which is around £10 cheaper than those sold by other baby retailers.
A set of three Animal Farm baby bibs is £2.80 at Primark, while Next has a lovely “Mummy” candle for £6. Wrap in cellophane sheets for £1 at Wilko and tie using string or ribbon. Far less than £4,800.
