According to South Africa’s UN mission, he will discuss “the memories and legacy of Mandela and what has been learned from his struggle and his life that can help up face the new challenges in the world today.”

He and Meghan will join president Abdulla Shahid, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, New York Mayor Eric Adams and Guinea´s Foreign Minister Morissanda Kouaté at the event.

Harry is giving his speech on Nelson Mandela’s birthday, which was first recognised by the General Assembly as an international day to honour him in 2009.

The day also serves to encourage community and humanitarian action.

This year the Nelson Mandela Foundation will highlight the plight of food security and climate change, urging people: “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”

When Nelson Mandela’s death was announced in 2013, Prince Harry was trekking in the South Pole as part of the Walking with the Wounded South Pole Allied Challenge.

He pitched the South African flag in his honour and has since met with Mandela’s widow – most recently in 2019 with Meghan during tour of South Africa.

The couple’s appearance today comes just days after a bombshell new book claimed the Queen told her most trusted staff she was relieved Meghan did not attend Prince Philip’s funeral.

Author Tom Bower alleged Her Majesty, 96, told her aides on the day of the funeral: “Thank goodness.”

He has also written how some of Harry’s oldest pals clashed with Meghan Markle over her views – and concluded she had no sense of humour.

The claims have been made in Bower’s book, Revenge: Meghan, Harry And The War Between The Windsors.
