Piers Morgan admits being ‘agitated’ when he quit GMB as ‘vicious’ trolling, Meghan Markle and Covid left him stressed

PIERS Morgan has admitted he was feeling “tired and agitated” on the day he quit Good Morning Britain.

The 55-year-old had spent the last 12 months on the cutting edge of breaking news about the coronavirus pandemic, Brexit, Megxit and Donald Trump losing the presidency.

But the dad-of-four says the constant “vicious and nasty” trolling had taken its toll in the run-up to him leaving the breakfast show.

Writing for the Mail on Sunday today, Piers said he’d suffered a” bad night of broken sleep.”

“It’s been a strange, stressful 12 months for everyone,” he continued.

“And I’ve been in the thick of all the increasingly toxic debates – whether about the pandemic, or those other hot-button issues of Brexit, Trump and the Sussexes.

Meghan Markle complained to ITV about Piers’ comments

“Normally, I revel in the noise. But unregulated social media, as anyone in the public eye will confirm, has got increasingly vicious and nasty.

“When we got on air, I was tired and agitated.

“Alex Beresford seemed equally uptight and launched into a very personal attack.”

Piers had invited the occasional stand-in weatherman on the show after he messaged saying he needed to better understand Meghan Markle‘s racism claims from the perspective of mixed-race people like himself.

He was embroiled in an on-air argument with Alex Beresford

“I understand that you don’t like Meghan Markle,” Alex said.

“You’ve made it so clear a number of times on this programme.

“I understand you’ve got a personal relationship with Meghan Markle or had one and she cut you off… she’s entitled to cut you off if she wants to.

“Has she said anything about you since she cut you off? I don’t think she has, but yet you continue to trash her…”

He stormed off set on his last day

Piers explained he stormed off set in case he said something he would regret after feeling the “steam rising inside me”.

ITV’s senior execs wanted him to say sorry on air following his heated clash with Alex over Meghan.

The evening the 55-year-old dramatically quit Good Morning Britain after refusing to apologise for saying he didn’t believe Meghan in her bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview.

Piers told his 7.8million followers: “On Monday, I said I didn’t believe Meghan Markle in her Oprah interview.

“I’ve had time to reflect on this opinion, and I still don’t. If you did, OK. Freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on.

“Thanks for all the love, and hate. I’m off to spend more time with my opinions.”
