PIERS Morgan has slammed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s plans for a “woke awards” ceremony to rival the royal gongs.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain, the host blasted the couple – sarcastically asking: “Who are these people?”
The opinionated telly host asked guests if they would like to be honoured in the couple’s new ceremony, which The Celeb Report exclusively revealed plans for yesterday.
Piers said: “It is just a story in the papers. They have applied for their own rival Honours List. Who are these people?”
But co-host Susanna Reid was quick to jump to the couple’s defence, quipping back: “What is wrong with you? It is not a rival Honours List.
“It is an awards ceremony. To reward people who have achieved incredible things.”
To which Piers snapped back: “Yeah that’s what the Honours List is, that’s what the royals do.”
Continuing to wind up his co-host, he added: “Your absolute dream would be if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle gave you an award for your services to woke journalism.”
The ceremony – which the Sussexes submitted an application for under their Archewell foundation – would honour do-gooders in the fields they champion.
They hope to celebrate “charitable service, education, science, literature, racial justice, gender equity, environmental stewardship, youth empowerment, health and mental health”, papers filed in the US reveal.
But one GMB guest suggested the ceremony could be “just another glitzy award” unlike other royal accolades that have an element of charity to them, like the Duke of Edinburgh award which encourages young people to get outdoors and help in the community.
Referencing the story in The Celeb Report, Piers insisted he wasn’t having a “dig” at the couple, just reading the news.
Although he did add: “Have you ever met a couple more determined to invade their own privacy.”
But Susanna quickly replied: “The one person who gives them more publicity than anyone else is you Piers Morgan.”
