Sophie Wessex paid tribute to the Queen with heartbreaking subtle detail on her bespoke dress at the funeral

SOPHIE, the Countess of Wessex, paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II in the bespoke dress she wore to the late monarch’s funeral on Monday.

The wife of Prince Edward wore a black Suzannah London coat dress, which was covered in Lily of the Valley flowers – the Queen’s favourite flower.

Queen Elizabeth was such a fan of the delicate flower that she had it in her coronation bouquet back in 1953.

It also featured in the Catherine, the Princess of Wales’, bridal bouquet in 2010.

And it was grown in abundance in the gardens of Buckingham Palace at the Queen’s request.

The Lily of the Valley was confirmed as the Queen’s favourite flower in 2019, as part of the #mychelseagarden campaign.

“The Queen has chosen Lily Of The Valley,” the Royal Family account wrote on Instagram.

“Lily Of The Valley featured in Her Majesty’s coronation bouquet and has held special association since.”

The floral detail on her dress wasn’t Sophie’s only nod to her mother-in-law at the funeral.

On the lapel of her dress, she wore an eye-catching black and silver brooch, featuring two strawberries.

The last time Sophie wore it in public was in 2014, when she attended Royal Ascot alongside Queen Elizabeth.

It was an emotional day for Sophie and her family, with the Countess and her husband seen wiping their eyes with tissues during the service inside Westminster Abbey.

In a previous interview with Harpers Bazaar UK, Sophie opened up about what she has learned from the Queen over the years.

“It doesn’t matter how tired you are – carry on,” she said.

“In the early days, I used to rush around as quickly as I could, but when you observe the Queen, she does things in such a measured way, and I hope I’ve learnt to try not to bounce into the room, but do things in a slightly more elegant way.”
