And she was the younger sister of former legendary Best Mate trainer Henrietta Knight.

Her biggest career win came at the Cheltenham Festival in 1997 when Karshi won the Stayers’ Hurdle.

Karshi carried the colours of her husband Lord Vestey, former Chairman of Cheltenham Racecourse.

Lord Vestey, 79, was also formerly the Master of the Horse to the Queen.

The couple oversaw a £750 million empire which includes the famous 6000 acre Stowell Estate in Gloucestershire, home to Stowell Park Stud.

A death notice in the Daily Telegraph read: “Celia Elizabeth SRN BA. Died suddenly, but peacefully, on Saturday 28th November, aged 71 years.

“Adored wife of Sam. Much loved mother of William, Arthur and Mary and loving Granny of Ella, Frankie, Sam and Cosima. Private family funeral. Memorial service later.”

Her love of her horses shone through further in the notice.

It continued: “Family flowers only please, but donations gratefully received in Celia’s memory to Ebony Horse Club.”

Another highlight of Lady Vestey’s racing days was super filly Macadamia.

She swooped the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes and also the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot.
