We’ve been married for 81 years and the Queen sent us a letter – yet doubters told us we wouldn’t last!

BRITAIN’S longest married couple have celebrated their 81st wedding anniversary — defying the doubters who told them they would not last.

Ron and Joyce Bond, aged 102 and 100, said they fell in love at first sight.

Others were not so sure as they married on January 4, 1941. But as they celebrated their latest milestone, daughter Eileen said: “It was said at the time of their wedding, it wouldn’t last long. How wrong did folks get that?”

The couple, now great-great-grandparents, were married at Newport Pagnell, Bucks, and had two children,

Joyce, a former Woolworths worker, said: “There is no boss in our relationship, we both give and take.”

Ron, who served in the Second World War before working at a garage, added: “Sometimes life is hard but we look after each other.”

They marked their anniversary with cream teas at their flat at a retirement village in Milton Keynes.



The couple received a letter from the Queen which helped mark their 80th wedding anniversary
