Prince Harry has enlisted the penmanship of author JR Moehringer to ghostwrite his memoir ‘Spare‘.

Moehringer is an American novelist and journalist and has written memoirs for two notable public figures during his career.

Before becoming an author, he was a journalist, and launched his career as an assistant news editor at the New York Times.

While at the Los Angeles Times he won the Pulitzer Prize for newspaper feature writing in 2000.

His own memoir, The Tender Bar, was published in 2005. 

The autobiography recounts his childhood, through to his early 20s, and tells of his coming-of-age experiences at a local bar.

Moehringer lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife, book editor Shannon Welch, and their two children.

J.R. Moehringer has previously written memoirs for Andre Agassi and Nike co-founder Phil Knight.

After retired tennis star Agassi read Moehringer’s book, he asked the author to collaborate with him on his own memoir. 

Open: An Autobiography, was published in 2009.

In it, Agassi talks about his childhood and his unconventional Armenian father, who came to the United States from Iran, where he was a professional boxer.

The story takes a look in to Agassi’s life as his father groomed him for tennis greatness by building a tennis court in their backyard and sending Agassi to tennis boarding school.

The book appeared to be a success and reached No. 1 on the New York Times Best Seller list, receiving favourable reviews.

The book won the Autobiography category of the 2010 British Sports Book Awards.

And in 2018, the book was listed on Esquire as one of “The 30 Best Sports Books Ever Written”.

In 2016, Moehringer ghostwrote Phil Knight’s memoir titled Shoe Dog.

The memoir highlights the history of Nike from its founding as Blue Ribbon Sports and its early challenges to becoming one of the world’s most well-known and profitable companies.

It also highlights provides an insight into certain parts of Phil Knight’s life.

Bill Gates named Shoe Dog one of his five favourite books of 2016 and in 2018, the book ranked at number five on The New York Times Best Seller List for business books.

What will Prince Harry’s new book be about?

Harry’s memoir will detail his life as a member of the Royal Family, his relationship with wife Meghan Markle, Megxit and raising his children.

In a statement, the Duke of Sussex said: “I’m writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become.

“I’ve worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope that in telling my story – the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned – I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think.

“I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to share what I’ve learned over the course of my life so far and excited for people to read a firsthand account of my life that’s accurate and wholly truthful.”

On October 27, 2022, Penguin Random House publishers confirmed that the book, titled ‘Spare’ will hit the shelves globally on January 10, 2023.

Publishers have said the book is written with ”raw, unflinching honesty” as well as being ”full of insight, revelation, self-
examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.”

Providing an insight into what the book is about, Penguin Random House added: ”Spare takes readers immediately back to one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror.

”As Diana, Princess of Wales, was laid to rest, billions wondered what the princes must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Spare will be available in both print and digital formats, as well as an unabridged audio edition of the book – and it will be available to buy in 16 different languages.

The audio edition of the book will be released will be read by the prince himself.

The book will be priced at £28, however the kindle edition is slightly cheaper at £13.99.
