ITALIAN actress Monica Vitti who was often dubbed as the queen of Italian cinema has died aged 90.

The actress was best known for her appearance in the movie Red Desert 1964.

Who was Monica Vitti?

Monica Vitti was a 90-year-old Italian actress born in Rome.

She began her acting career in amateur productions as a teenaged and then trained as an actress at Rome’s National Academy of Dramatic Arts, where she graduated in 1953.

She also attended Pittman’s College, where she played a teen in the charity performance of Dario Niccodemi’s Le Nemica.

Monica then turned Germany with an italian acting troupe and her first actual stage appearance in Rome was for a production of Niccolò Machiavelli’s La Mandragola.

She made her acting debut in the 1960’s when she starred in films directed by Michelangelo Antonioni.

However, after working with Antonioni, she decided to venture into making comedies, working with director Mario Monicelli on many of his films.

Monica won five David di Donatello Awards for Best Actress, seven Italian Golden Globes for Best Actress, the Career Golden Globe, and the Venice Film Festival Career Golden Lion Award.

What was Monica Vitti’s cause of death?

Vitti cause of death was due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease on February 2, 2022.

In 2011, it was disclosed that she was diagnosed with the disease and had been “removed from the public gaze for the last 15 years.”

Culture Minister Dario Franceschini revealed the news of the actresses death today in a statement that reads:“Farewell to Monica Vitti, farewell to the queen of Italian cinema,”

“Today is a really sad day, a great artist and a great Italian disappeared,” he wrote.

Vitti made her last public appearance in 2002 at the Paris premiere of Notre-Dame de Paris

Was Monica Vitti married and did she have children?

Vitti had a long term relationship with Michelangelo Antonioni, whom she met in the late 1950s.

However, by the late 1960s, they stopped working on films together which placed a strain on their relationship and in a later interview, Vitti confirmed that Antonioni had ended their relationship.

In 2000, she married director and scriptwriter Roberto Russo, with whom she had been with since 1973.

The actress doesn’t have any children.

In 2018 her husband confirmed that Vitti lived in Rome and had the appropriate care is provided to her due to her Alzheimer’s disease.
