Will Prince William wear a crown at the Coronation?

Prince William is expected to wear a small crown, also called a coronet, at King Charles Coronation in May 2023.

His coronet will be placed on his head once the St Edward’s Crown is placed on the head of the King.

Prince William is expected to vow to be the “liege man of life and limb” at the ceremony.

This means he will be required to kneel down in front of the monarch and pay homage to him during the Coronation ceremony, as in old traditions for men of the Royal Family.

Usually, this would apply to all men in the family, however King Charles will break with the tradition and William will be the only male royal to perform the ritual.

Does the Prince of Wales have a crown?

When Charles became Prince of Wales in 1969 a coronet was made for him.

It was designed by Louis Osman for Charles’s investiture at Caernarfon.

It is made of 24 carat gold with four cross patées and four fleur-de-lys.

It has both diamonds and emeralds set in platinum around the crown.

The coronet holds an orb on top with the insignia of the Prince of Wales engraved.

The current coronet is also engraved with King Charles star sign – scorpio.

Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton became the new Prince and Princess of Wales on September 9, 2022, after the Queen’s death.

As of April 2023 it is not confirmed if the coronet has been given an update with Prince William‘s star sign, which is cancer.

Which crowns will King Charles and Queen Camilla wear?

King Charles will wear the St Edward’s Crown during his Coronation.

It is the same crown Queen Elizabeth wore at her Coronation in 1953.

His Majesty will also wear the Imperial State Crown during the service.

The Imperial State Crown was made by jewellers Garrard & Company for the Coronation of George VI in 1937.

It was also featured during the lying in state and funeral procession of Queen Elizabeth II and is present during every State Opening of Parliament.

Queen Camilla will wear Queen Mary’s Crown.

However the crown is being reset with diamonds that were part of Queen Elizabeth’s personal jewellery collection.
