A MINECRAFT MOVIE

(PG) 101mins

★★★★☆

High-energy, immersive, and delightfully strange

As the best-selling video game ever, it was only a matter of time before Minecraft made the leap to the big screen. After countless false starts, we finally have an exciting adaptation just in time for the Easter holidays.

A hilarious action-packed family adventure

Starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black and under the direction of Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite), it is a hilarious action-packed family adventure. The plot sees four misfits pulled into the Overworld, a bizarre, cubic wonderland where anything is possible.

Visually stunning

Visually, the film does a rather decent job of translating Minecraft’s blocky aesthetic. The CGI fully embraces the surreal, chaotic nature of the game’s world, making every towering structure and pixelated landscape feel both immersive and delightfully strange.

A fun adventure for the whole family

Jack Black and Jason Momoa deliver entertaining performances in this fun, if slightly conventional, adventure that captures the playful spirit of the game. Minecraft: The Movie may not be a masterpiece, but its sheer sense of fun makes it an easy win for families looking for something to watch during the holidays.

MR BURTON

★★★☆☆

Richard Jenkins's journey to becoming Richard Burton

This well-crafted Welsh movie tells the story of how Richard Jenkins became one of Britain’s greatest actors – Richard Burton. Industry actor Harry Lawtey does a great job in his portrayal of a young Richard Jenkins as he transforms into the iconic figure.

DEATH OF A UNICORN

A Minecraft Movie Review: High-energy, immersive & delightfully strange – this film is perfect for families

★★☆☆☆

A high-concept comedy horror with a lackluster script

Without a more original script, Death Of A Unicorn falls short despite the efforts of the cast. Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega star in this bloodbath where corporate greed clashes with magical creatures, resulting in a limb-ripping and entrails-spilling story that misses the mark.
