A Difficult Upbringing
Jasmine, 47, revealed that she grew up in a house filled with items that her mother refused to throw out. This created tension between them, causing frequent arguments. Jasmine even felt too afraid to invite friends or dates into their home.
A New Understanding
Over time, Jasmine came to realize that hoarding is an anxiety condition that is beyond her mother's control. She expressed gratitude towards her mother for helping her become a more compassionate person and for developing a stronger relationship with her outside of the hoarding issue.
Recognizing Hoarding as a Mental Health Condition
Earlier this year, new guidelines were released to help GPs diagnose hoarding as a mental health condition. Hoarding affects approximately 2% of the population and can cause individuals to clutter their living spaces to the point where they can no longer move around comfortably.
A Guide for Diagnosis and Treatment
Psychologists have now published a guide to assist medical professionals in recognizing and treating hoarding disorder. Dr. Sharon Morein of Anglia Ruskin University emphasized that excessive clutter in living spaces, difficulty with discarding possessions, and distress caused by these behaviors are key symptoms of hoarding disorder.
From Symptom to Standalone Condition
Hoarding disorder was officially recognized as a standalone mental health condition in 2019 after previously being categorized as a symptom of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
