There are seven contestants remaining in the competition

Host Katherine Ryan welcomed eight craftspeople to the competition to try and impress judges Dinny Hall and Shaun Leane.

Over the next six weeks there will be set challenges, and at the end of the episode one will be crowned Jeweller Of The Week, and another will be sent home.

This week the contestants were tasked with creating a bespoke nameplate necklace and standalone earring in a matter of hours.

Fans were livid when they found out that Steve was the first to leave the show.

This comes after Steve shared his touching backstory earlier in the episode.

The 29-year-old, whose birth name is Mustafa, fled from Syria during the war and now lives in London with his three cats.

JEWEL IN THE CROWN

How to apply for BBC Two show All That Glitters

He made his way to the Calais Jungle – which is where he found his love for jewellery making.

Steve said on the show: “I was in Damascus in Syria when the war broke out, and I had to flee at the age of 20.

“And then I walked across Europe on foot, all the way up to France.

“It was when I was in the Calais Jungle refugee camp that I discovered jewellery-making, beginning from just making a ring out of a nail.

“I kind of became the Jungle’s unofficial jeweller.”

All That Glitters fans took to Twitter to share their heartbreak over him being booted off the show.

One said: “Watched #allthatglitters and the only contestant I was watching it for has been sent home in the first episode. Devastated. #BringBackSteve.”

“A shame that someone has to go the first week. These ridiculously timed challenges – a bespoke piece of jewellery in 3.5 hours?! Steve’s piece was beautiful, shame about the chain. His story is incredible, too. #allthatglitters,” a second fan added.

Another added: “I’ve just caught up with Steve’s story. I’ll be sorry to see him go.”

“Well the light just went out on #allthatglitters …I don’t think that’s the last we’ll be seeing of Steve,” a fourth chimed in.

A fifth said: “No-oooo not #Steve he’s too fit to be sent home #notwatchinganymore #beautifulboy #AllThatGlitters.”

Meanwhile another fan issued a similar thought, saying, “I bet when they selected Steve for the show, the producers were like “Kerching! This fella will keep the ladies watching…” Best laid plans eh guys? #AllThatGlitters.”
