Anita Carey dead: Coronation Street and Doctors star dies aged 75 after breast cancer battle

A CORONATION Street and Doctors star has died aged 75 after a breast cancer battle.

Anita Carey, who played Joyce Smedley in the beloved soap between 1996 and 1997, passed away last month after being first diagnosed with the disease in 2010.

She appeared as Brenda Summers in Coronation Street in 1978 and then Joyce Smedly in the mid-90s

Before that, she appeared in Corrie as Brenda Summers in 1978

She enjoyed a glittering career in TV comedy, as well as in epic dramas The Spoils of War and First Among Equals, as well as playing Vivien March in Doctors between 2007 and 2009.

Born in 1946 in Halifax, Yorkshire, she worked as a typist for a carpet firm before going into acting.

Even after being diagnosed, she continued to take on stage and TV work in the USA.

Carey reportedly died on July 19.

She leaves behind her husband Mark Wing-Davey and their two children, Zanna and Isabella.

The pair met in Sheffield while appearing in a 1973 production of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde at the Crucible and married in 2002.

She was previously engaged to fellow actor Steve Hodson in the late ’60s.
