ANTIQUES Roadshow fans were left gobsmacked after two guests brought an incredible moment of history onto the BBC show.
Fiona Bruce hosted the episode, held at Porchester Castle, Hampshire, and we were introduced to two siblings with a very valuable letter.
Titanic survivor Sidney Daniels’ children appeared on the show
Antiques expert Hilary Kay spoke to the son and daughter of Sidney Daniels, a survivor of the Titanic.
Sidney worked as a plate washer on the famous ship, aged only 18, and managed to survive the disaster.
The guests’ late father managed to keep a letter with him, which had been water damaged but was still readable.
Sidney’s daughter gave a reading of the letter, explaining where her dad was when the Titanic hit an iceberg back in 1912.
The letter astounded Hilary, who called it “an extraordinary momentum”.
She added that “anything relating to the Titanic had an extraordinary effect on people.
“I mean, it is an emotional moment to hold something so linked in to such an extraordinary moment in history.”
The expert then got down to businesses, explaining what it could fetch at auction.
“We’re talking about around £10,000 is the realistic amount,” she said.
The Daniels siblings agreed that the potential £10,000 was a “very nice” sum, but added that they’d never sell it.
“It’s not going out of the family,” continued the son, explaining how he has hopes of the letter going to a museum to showcase.
Hilary responded: “Very good. I’m delighted that then more people will be able to share that.”
