BBC Breakfast viewers left in tears as show pays tribute to Dame Deborah James

BBC Breakfast viewers were left reaching for the tissues after the show paid homage to the late Dame Deborah James.

The Celeb Report columnist died at the age of 40 on Tuesday – almost six years after she was diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Deborah, also known as BowelBabe to her legion of Instagram fans, was told she had incurable cancer just days before Christmas in 2016, at the age of 35.

During Wednesday morning’s instalment of BBC Breakfast, tributes came in thick and fast for the mum-of-two.

Following her tragic passing, BBC 5 Live presenter Tony Livesey spoke about his friend and former colleague.

“She was this extraordinary burst of life that was given a platform on 5 Live and just took it to the max and all she wanted to do was save lives,” said Tony, fighting back the tears.

“I’m telling you now, if one person goes away from this interview or everything you’ve done this morning, checks their poo and it saves their life, then Deb’s will be very happy.”

Following his interview with presenters Jon Kay and Nina Warhurst, viewers took to Twitter in their droves to share their views on the heartbreaking news.

Alongside an array of sad-faced emojis, one person penned: “The tributes to Dame Deborah James are so touching on BBC Breakfast this morning.”

Echoing their comments, someone else said: “Can’t stop crying watching BBC Breakfast’s coverage on Dame Deborah James. She leaves a huge legacy.”

While a third added: “Dame Deborah James was such an inspiration to so many people. So incredibly sad.”

Deborah’s heartbroken family revealed the inspirational Sun columnist died on Tuesday surrounded by her loved ones – sparking a flurry of tributes.

Boris Johnson said he was “terribly saddened” by the news of Dame Deborah’s passing.

The PM wrote: “What an inspiration she was to so many.

“The awareness she brought to bowel cancer and the research her campaigning has funded will be her enduring legacy. Because of her, many many lives will be saved.”
